In today’s “Are you frickin’ serious?” news, Speaker of the House John Boehner told interviewer Charlie Rose this morning that, in his opinion, President Obama is not currently interested or actively involved in governing the United States:
“The president checked out last Labor Day. All he’s done is campaign full time for the last six months. He’s not been engaged in the legislative process at all. There have been no efforts at trying to work with Democrats and Republicans to address this issue at all. And it’s, it’s shameful.”
Yeah, he really said that.
I don’t know what planet John Boehner’s been living on for the past few years, but wherever it was, it’s obviously somewhere without access to news of any kind. Otherwise, Boehner would have known that it is, in fact, the Republican party that “checked out” of governing this country, and they did it a long time ago.
To be precise, they “checked out” in October of 2010, when Mitch McConnell made this declaration during an address to the Heritage Foundation:
Just in case you missed it the first time, McConnell revisited – and reaffirmed – this position in 2011:
The GOP has wanted to accomplish nothing aside from making it tougher for President Obama to be re-elected this year. They have wanted nothing more than to see bad news about the economy, unemployment, housing and gas prices continue. They have wanted nothing more than to oppose and obstruct legislation that is proposed by the President or his party – even if it is the same stuff they themselves once proposed and supported (cap and trade and the individual mandate for health care, to name just two examples off the top of my head).
In short, the Republican party has been “checked out” of anything other than campaigning and manipulating for a 2012 White House takeover, since 2010, if not earlier. John Boehner has a lot of damn nerve to assume that the American public would have forgotten this fact when he ran his mouth to Charlie Rose this morning. But I’d like to remind him that we haven’t forgotten, and that we all think he needs to STFU.
