From The BrabbleRabble, this is an excellent reminder of how things REALLY work on Capitol Hill nowadays. Lots of good info here, and the “ALEC Rock” video is a really effective video that explains the ALEC menace in 2 and a half animated minutes.

ALEC, or American Legislative Exchange Council, is a collaboration between politicians and corporations who work together to push forward legislation that benefits business (and fills campaign coffers). ALEC calls itself a “nonpartisan public-private partnership.” You may have heard that ALEC was influential directly involved in the passage of Stand Your Ground laws in states all across the nation, which gained national attention after the shooting death of unarmed teenager Trayvon Martin by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman. ALEC is also involved in the push for privatized schools and prisons, legislation affecting air and water quality, voter ID laws, and many other issues that directly affect the public.

Most of us who know who our president and vice president are, and a little bit about the political parties and their platforms. Few of us, however, pay much attention to state politics, and most of us probably can’t name our state representatives. The irony of this…
